How Laura Puga, Codex DNA’s VP of People + Culture, Sees the Future of Work in a Post-Pandemic World

What work do you do at Codex DNA?
I work with an amazing team that creates people processes for Codex DNA and facilitates the evolution of our company culture. This function is usually called Human Resources or HR, but we have purposely branded ourselves as People + Culture to go beyond the status quo. There are various extensions of people we actively collaborate with — including leadership, culture champions, cross functional teams, team members, and the community.

What do you think has defined an organization as a top employer during this pandemic?
In the last year, we have focused on change management and helping our teams adapt. Our people have absorbed so much change during this time; after all, most of us have never experienced global pandemic before. This last year, we have carefully pondered, “how do we keep people safe while still understanding that people have different needs?” It is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and it is important to keep this in mind in the hiring process. When prospecting candidates we evaluate not only how they might deal with change, but how they stay resilient through challenging times.

How do you tackle bringing on so many new people at once?
Candidly — it takes a village including my team, people leaders, mentors, and fellow teammates. My team is continuously improving our talent acquisition and onboarding processes. We have hiring managers that are engaged and motivated to find great talent who will hit the ground running and want to grow their career with us. What’s always top of mind for me is considering skills & competencies needed along with traits that indicate someone will thrive in our fast paced, agile culture. Short answer – we focus on our process which results in quality hires.

What is the next objective in Codex DNA’s journey to keep improving the employee experience?
Two things come to mind. One is to partner with our leaders and culture champions to evolve our culture intentionally. As we add more team members, their perspectives and innovative ideas influence our culture as well. The second is keeping a good pulse on change management. The only thing that’s constant is change. From a COVID-19 perspective, we need to think about how we consider the employee experience and how we effectively collaborate as an organization as the shift occurs to a new normal or post-pandemic world.

What kinds of jobs are available right now?
We have roles open across several functions including, but not limited to sales, marketing, R&D, engineering, operations, manufacturing, and more. We are hiring several positions in these functions the rest of the year. What should prospective employees know about the company?
